Zell Dincht comes from a world that pretty closely mirrors Final Fantasy 8's canon... up until the fight with Adel.
The plan was to kill Adel, have Ultimecia possess Rinoa, and then use Ellone to send them back in time and then stop Time Compression halfway through. Unfortunately, in Zell's canon, this didn't go as planned.
Zell and her friends were unable to defeat Adel, resulting in her stealing Rinoa's powers (and killing the girl that Zell had become fast friends with). With Ultimecia possessing Adel again, the surviving SeeD members chose to make a hasty retreat with Ellone rather than risk Time Compression.
In having to beat a hasty retreat, though, they lose two additional SeeD members - Irvine, and Selphie. It's a hard loss to the survivors, and it's thanks to Quistis that they even get Ellone away from Lunatic Pandora and onto the Ragnarok.
Zell now lives in a world on the brink of war, playing cat and mouse with a Sorceress who's really two - and the most powerful Sorceress left in the world. She, Squall, and Quistis do their best to keep Ellone out of Adel's hands, still reeling from the loss of their friends and trying to figure out another way to defeat Ultimecia.
